March 2009                                                                                   Issue #50

Greetings!
Spring time in Colorado is beautiful but unpredictable. One day we're running around in T-shirts enjoying sunny weather and the next day we're driving a slow crawl home in the middle of a snowstorm. One of my favorite joys of the season is walking my garden and discovering the signs of tulips, daffodils, and other Spring flowers as they peek out with their promise of beauty and a renewal of life.

The Format Painter: Document Decorating Made Easy
Once you've created a format that you like, you don't have to repeat all those steps each time you want to use that format in another location. Instead, Microsoft Office programs offer a quick way to copy formatting from one item--such as text in Word, a cell in Excel, or a shape in PowerPoint--to another. The answer is the Format Painter, one of the most handy little features I know in Microsoft Office. It's a way to copy any formatting you want to duplicate: font style and color, shading, borders, and more.

Format PainterHere's how the Format Painter works:
  1. From most Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), select the text or object with the formatting that you want to copy.
  2. Next, click the Format Painter button which is found on the Standard toolbar (Office 2003 or earlier) or in the Clipboard group on the Office 2007 Home tab (shown at right). Format Painter PointerYour pointer will change to a paintbrush.
  3. Now, click and select the text or object that you to format. The Format Painter only copies formatting but not content.

BONUS TIP: If you want to apply the same formatting to more than one item, select the formatting you want, double-click the Format Painter, and then select each word, phrase, or paragraph you want to apply formatting to. The destination can be different parts of a document or even cells in different worksheets. When you're finished, press [Esc] or click the Format Painter button again. No guessing, no complicated steps, and you can use the Format Painter in just about any Office program.

To your success,

Internet Explorer is Now 8!
After owning almost 90% of the browser market at time, Internet Explorer has lost some ground in the browser wars to Firefox and other competitors. As of February, Firefox now commands a 22% global market share vs. 68% for IE, according to Net Applications. The latest release, Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) is now available. Should you make the switch?
