Access 2007: Top 7 New Features

In addition to the dramatically different user interface and new file formats shared with other Microsoft Office 2007 programs, Microsoft Office Access 2007 provides a powerful set of tools that help you to quickly start tracking, reporting, and sharing information:

  1. Access 2007 includes professionally designed Database Templates for building complete tracking applications that contain pre-defined tables, forms, reports, queries, macros, and relationships.

  2. By using the Report View, you can browse an accurate rendering of your report without having to print or display it in Print Preview.

  3. Use the new Layout View to more quickly make design changes while you view data in a form or report. With the Layout View and the new Group, Sort, and Total pane, you can add a group level and request a total which will show you the changes live, in your report.

  4. The Navigation Pane replaces the Database window from earlier versions of Access. This pane lists and provides easy access and organization to all of the objects in the currently open database. Use the Navigation Pane to organize your objects by object type, date created, date modified, or even by custom groups that you create.

  5. New Data Types and controls include multi-valued fields for complex data, attachment fields for files, enhanced memo fields, and date/time fields that automatically employ a calendar for picking dates.

  6. Datasheet improvements include a Total row, in which you can display a sum, count, and other calculations directly in the datasheet. Access 2007 automatically determines the best data type for each field so that you are up and running in no time. You can now even paste data from Microsoft Office Excel 2007 tables into a new datasheet—Access 2007 creates all of the fields and recognizes the data types automatically.

  7. You can now display your database objects in Tabbed Documents instead of overlapping windows. This tabbed document interface is optional so you can choose the best environment for Access 2007.
